Travelling by train or bus?
The bus station is 1½ miles from the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) and the railway station about 2½ miles.
The CMS is easily accessible from the Uni 4 and Citi 4 bus routes. There is information on Cambridge bus timetables and routes at
If taking a taxi, ask for Clarkson Road (off Grange Road); the main entrance to the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is via the pedestrian path by the Isaac Newton Institute.
Travelling by car?
From the South, via the M11:
Leave the M11 at exit 13 (the third exit marked for Cambridge) and turn right onto the A1303 towards Cambridge (Madingley Road). Go straight on through the first set of traffic lights (or turn left for the Park and Ride) and continue to the next traffic lights (with Churchill College playing fields on your left). Turn right at the lights onto Grange Road and then take the first right onto Clarkson Road (see below for information about parking).
From the North, via the A14:
Exit from the A14, just before it turns into the M11, by the A1307 (Huntingdon Road) into Cambridge. Pass Fitzwilliam College and New Hall on your right (approx 3 miles). Get in right-hand lane. At traffic lights, turn right onto Mount Pleasant and Shelly Row; follow one way system along Albion Row onto Lady Margaret Road. At traffic lights, turn right up Madingley Road. Take the first left at the next traffic lights onto Grange Road followed by the first right onto Clarkson Road.
There is free 1-hour limit (from 8am to 5pm) street parking on Clarkson Road and unrestricted street parking on Wilberforce Road (we suggest the end accessible via Clarkson Road as this is usually less busy). This is extremely close to the CMS.
There is limited parking in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences car-park, accessed from Wilberforce Road off Madingley Road (please see the map) - please note that as Wilberforce Road is blocked to traffic half-way down there is no access to the CMS car-park from Clarkson Road. Please note that during University term-time the CMS car park is often full. If you are disabled and need on-site parking please ring the CMS Reception on 01223 765000 in advance and they will be happy to help. NB: for the Cambridge Science Festival events on Saturday 26th March 2011 the car park barrier will be open and parking will therefore be available on site. (Please note that the car park has only 50 spaces, so on-site parking is limited and may fill up quickly).
The Park and Ride facility on Madingley Road is about 20 minutes walk from the CMS (see walkit.com for route and estimated timings) and there is a shuttle bus service (the Uni 4/Citi 4, see above) which runs from the Park and Ride with a stop on Grange Road (the ‘Madingley Road’ stop) very close to the CMS - check the timetable.
Getting into the CMS
The main entrance to the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is via the pedestrian path (signed) next to the Isaac Newton Institute car-park on Clarkson Road, and then through the gatehouse. The CMS site consists of a number of buildings – go to the central building with the low, curved roof and the glass front (directly in front of you as you come through the gatehouse) which is where the Reception desk is located. There are signs showing the route to the main entrance around the site and from the CMS car park. The telephone number for CMS Reception, staffed during normal office hours and Saturday mornings in University term time, is 01223 765000.
